Durham Kitchen Remodel Preserves Heritage of 20th-Century Home

In our latest kitchen remodel in Durham, NC, we were careful to preserve the heritage of this late 20th-Century home. Every detail from the custom-color cabinets with champagne bronze fixtures to the heart pine hardwood floors was chosen to enhance historical architectural details like the historic molding around the windows and doors. Read on to learn the specific details that make this kitchen unique.

The new semi-custom shaker-style cabinets go all the way to the ceiling providing additional storage. The historical color of the cabinets and vertical beadboard on the island give a subtle nod to the history of the home. The hide-a-hood vent conceals the vent so it blends in with the surrounding cabinets. Other classic choices in the design include quartz countertops, 3-tiered dome pendant lights, an apron-front sink, and a subway tile backsplash.

Although these homeowners kept most of the renovation central to their kitchen remodel, we made two additional changes that made a lasting impact on the overall flow of the downstairs of this historical home. First, we painted all the walls, ceilings, and trim throughout the entire downstairs. Lastly, we replaced the tile floors in the kitchen, mudroom, and sitting room, and refinished the existing heart pine floors so that all the flooring is now the same.
